The Sprenger Family
Today, as in 1959, Sprenger Health Care Systems continue to be privately held by the Sprenger Family. Our organization has grown to include a family of 11 Retirement Communities located throughout Northeast Ohio and Indiana. We employ a staff of over 1,400 employees who maintain the same philosophy of care and dedication that was established so long ago by our founder, Grace Sprenger.
From 1968 to 1990, Sprenger Health Care Systems grew over 200% under the direction of Tony and Donel Sprenger, Grace's two sons. Amherst Manor was expanded to 102 beds and Autumn Aegis, Lorain Manor and Anchor Lodge were all purchased.
The '90s were an exciting time, when Tony and Donel hired the third generation to assume the day to day responsibilities. Two of Tony's sons, Scott and Mark, joined the business, in addition to Donel's son-in-law, Chris Mallet. From 2002 to 2006, additional members of the Sprenger family became part of the organization including Donel’s daughter Nicole, Tony’s son Michael, and Donel’s son-in-law Doug Hutsenpiller.
As with their predecessors, the third generation of Sprenger’s wasted no time in making their mark on the future of the organization. The third generation of Sprenger’s led the way to purchase the Elms Retirement Village in Wellington, Horn Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Smithville Western Commons in Wooster, and Heather Knoll Nursing and Rehabilitation in Tallmadge. Sprenger Health Care Systems doubled in size from four nursing centers to eight in just three years.
In 2004, Sprenger Health Care Systems and Kopf Construction joined forces to expand Towne Center Community Campus and develop a leading edge continuing care community in Avon Lake. The new campus includes independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing care, and a memory support program.
In February of 2006, Sprenger Health Care Systems purchased Grande Village Retirement Community in Twinsburg making this our 9th location.
In March of 2011, Sprenger Health Care Systems purchased Rose Lane Nursing and Rehabilitation in Massillon.
We are excited to announce the opening of Sprenger's first care center in Indiana. Sprenger Health Care of Mishawaka will open Winter 2012.
Our financial savvy and passion for caring will enable us to continue to succeed and grow well into the future.
